The Dar-es-Salaam Book Club (DBC) is a community of people who read books which are non-fiction, self-help, motivational. We share and discuss books and motivate each other to implement what we learn.

The Syllabus of Life Skills (SLS) is a collection of the top 100 books in various personal development topics. When a person goes through the SLS and implements what they learn, they will have a successful balanced life.

In traditional academics, syllabi are established to ensure students country-wide acquire the same knowledge quality and content. Education experts convene and collectively review books and knowledge sources and align on which books address to their objective as optimal as possible. However there is a lot of knowledge and life skills that are not (and some cannot) be acquired in traditional academic classroom settings.

A person can’t be eligible to say book ABC is the best book if that is the only book that person has read (or very few) – many (if possible all) books have to be read. Even if a person has read many books, one person alone is not eligible to say book ABC is the best – a collection/panel of people should engage in reading and collectively align on which are the best books. The book club aims at being such a platform for collectively establishing which the best books are. The syllabus is diverse to ensure you have a balanced successful life. Overcome the temptation to focus too much on particular topics to avoid intellectual malnutrition.

In every knowledge area there are so many books written - when you decide to read you will get overwhelmed by the number of books available on a respective topic. The book club and the SLS helps to inform you which books are worth your time and money.

Books have varying level of depth and difficulty. The book club and SLS helps to advise you in which sequence you should read books so as to comprehend them efficiently and effectively.

Reading requires will power discipline – being in a book club knowing there are x number of other people going through the same challenge of reading and implementing learnings, helps to motivate you. Get a ‘Reading Buddy/Partner’ so that together, A Reading Buddy should be someone already in your life whom you encounter regularly; ideally they should be your love partner, or else a sibling, relative, best friend, neighbor, or work colleague.

Some people mistakenly ‘read by accident’ – they see someone holding or sharing a book with a nice title then immediately decide to start reading it. Don’t do that, control yourself!! Based on the stages of you and your Reading Buddy’s lives and interests, every three months you chose themes of books to read and hold each other accountable to implement what you learn. Read with a purpose.

Most books are on average 300 pages long. You can read 10 pages a day starting on the first of the month. Everyday just read until you reach the page number equivalent to that date times 10 i.e. on 3rd of the month read up to page 3 x 10 = page 30. Excel templates to plan are sent via email.

Teaching is a profession – so even if parents have acquired knowledge from experience (and reading, etc), in some contexts they will have limitations to efficiently and effectively convey some knowledge to their children. Books are a good avenue to allow people to acquire knowledge from professionals.

The vision is to create a platform which guarantees the future generation will develop success skills. There should be standard books that everyone is expected to read without failure.

1. Get a Reading Buddy and join or start a book club with your family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers. Ask for recommendations. For Free summaries subscribe at WWW.DARBOOKCLUB.COM

2. Every time you finish reading a book, ask yourself is the book worth being in a top 5 list in its category. If yes then make a note of that and eventually establish your own SLS. Also let us know about the book because our SLS continuously needs collective and current input.

3. The current trend for busy people is to listen to audio books; subscribe at www.audible.com (15$/month) or www.scribd.com (8$/month).

4. SHARING IS CARING – Tell everyone about the book club.
